CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith announced Thursday he is donating $100,000 to the survivors of last week's horrific shooting in Aurora, Colorado.
Smith said he will pledge the money to help pay for shooting victims' extensive medical bills.
In all, a dozen people were killed and 58 others were injured during a shooting at a midnight showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises' at the theater just outside of Denver.
“As a father and husband I cannot imagine the pain and suffering the victims are going through,” Smith said in a statement. “My family’s hearts and prayers are extended to theirs, and I hope this contribution might assist in paying some of the medical bills that will help allow these families to move forward in this tragic circumstance.
Smith joins several other professional athletes in the efforts, including many Denver Broncos players locally who have reached out.
"Hopefully this helps a little bit," Smith said. "From one NFL city to another, God bless."
