CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The wives and girlfriends of Carolina Panthers players and coaches donated time and effort Wednesday to help 20 local families in need.
They shopped at the Sam’s Club in Pineville, going up and down aisles looking for items on wish lists.
Most of the items were for need, not want. The people receiving the items were selected by the The Salvation Army. Half of them are moms with kids who recently moved out of a homeless shelter and are trying to turn houses into homes for their families.
"There are few wants and a whole lot of needs on there for moms, dads and children as well,” said Shelley Henderson with The Salvation Army. “Things that we don't think about as we're moving into a new home that they desperately need, because most of the time they come to us with nothing.”
Stephanie Rivera, wife of Panthers Head Coach Ron Rivera, led the way.
"She just wants dishes and clothes,” Rivera said while looking at a wish list.
Risalyn Burzynski, Deangelo William's girlfriend, shopped for a 12 year-old boy.
"All he asked for was underwear, socks and pajamas. He just wants anything, so we're going to make sure he gets a basketball goal and some really cool stuff to play with this year."
Each needy family on the list gets $800 dollars in merchandise, plus a $200 dollar Sam’s Club gift card for food. The entire thousand-dollars worth for each family is donated by Sam’s Club.
"We all feel so blessed with all the things we have and this is our way to give back. We understand it's tough out there right now,” Rivera said.
