CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Some of you have tipped us off to a story about a bad car crash involving Carolina Panthers Quarterback Cam Newton. It comes from the website of the Global Associated News, which reports that Newton broke both legs in a car crash.

According to the site, it's a developing story. It happened about 30 minutes ago. It says an old lady in an Audi ran a red light and hit Newton’s BMW. It’s all attributed to a spokesperson for the Carolina highway safety authority.

It sounds really serious.

Except it's not.

It's all fake.

Fake fake fake.

But the story’s still making the rounds on social media. Why?

In the video above, NBC Charlotte’s Jeremy Markovich has the honest truth behind the hoax.

Or if that’s too long, you can just watch the six-second Vine version here.
