CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Bobcats have their guy in former Lakers assistant Steve Clifford, who is considered by many to be one of the best assistants in the NBA.
Clifford replaces the fired Mike Dunlap who the Cats let go last month after one season on the job. He has a strong defensive background in the league and has worked alongside some of the top coaches including Stan Van Gundy in Orlando.
Van Gundy gave his thoughts on Clifford’s hire saying, "He's a great Xs and Os guy, and he has got a great ability to teach and he has great relationships with players. He's very much into preparation. He won't take any shortcuts. Steve will put a great emphasis on developing players. Not just skill development, but using film, talking to guys individually, spending time with them. And on the court he will emphasize defense, ball movement and guys playing together. He will be a fabulous head coach."
Clifford has worked as an assistant in the league for the past 13 years.
He spent 15 years in the college ranks as a head coach or assistant; his last season was with East Carolina. In the NBA, he worked with both Mike and Stan Van Gundy in New York, Houston and with the Magic.
