SHELBY, N.C. -- Call it an instant classic. Friday night, the Burns Bulldogs, behind Charlotte recruit Chris Montgomery, rallied past county and conference rival Shelby 38-34 in the game of the year so far.
The Golden Lions entered this matchup unbeaten in the South Mountain Athletic Conference. They scored the first 14 points behind some nifty running by quarterback RJ George.
Shelby even led 20-7 at the break and 27-14 in the third, when the unbeaten Bulldogs stormed back, thanks to the play of Montgomery. The senior quarterback's 32 yard touchdown run have Burns it's first lead at 28-27.
Shelby answered, as George found Antwan Wright for a 41 yard score, pulling the Golden Lions back in front 34-31. The Bulldogs then took the lead for good on a Montgomery 45 yard touchdown pass to Jalen King.
"It's great to be 8-0," Montgomery said, "to come from behind and beat a good conference rival, it's great!" Burns head coach Matt Beam added, "Credit our kids for never giving up! They deserve this win tonight!"
Shelby takes next week off, while Burns returns home to face Draughn.
