RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Samuel Starks had 19 points and Pierre Givens 13, leading North Rowan to a 64-57 comeback win over Pender County for the Class 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic
Association men's championship Saturday.
It was the second championship for North Rowan (27-5). The first was in 1986 in 2-A.
Addison Spruill led Pender (24-5) with 32 points and 17 rebounds and Pender led 39-25 at the half.
North Rowan trimmed the margin to 47-42 after three quarters, with Givens knocking down a 3-pointer in the closing seconds. North Rowan took the lead for good on Timothy Bates' layup with 4:01 left that made it 53-52.
It was the third state title in as many seasons for North Rowan coach Andrew Mitchell, who led Salisbury to 2-A women's titles in 2009-10.
