Independence, Butler atop poll

Mecklenburg County rivals Independence and Butler rank 1-2 in the Associated Press N.C. 4A poll, as voted by a statewide panel of media members.

Mallard Creek, which lost to Independence by one point, is No.8.

Among the 16 media members, Independence got nine first-place votes and Butler six.

Nationally, Independence is No.23 in the National Prep Poll and No.40 in ESPN's poll. ESPN ranks Butler No.48.

In this week's Sweet 16, Butler is No. 1 and Independence No.2. Langston Wertz Jr.
