MATTHEWS, N.C. -- After winning back-to-back state championships, Butler High School football coach Mike Newsome is leaving the Bulldogs to coach the Kannapolis Wonders.

Newsome replaces Ron Massey, who retired.

"Butler's a great place," Newsome told the Charlotte Observer. "I love it there and love the kids there, but there's not too many times an opportunity like this comes along to coach in a town that is as supportive of football as (Kannapolis) is."

Butler athletics director Courtney Paschal said offensive coordinator Brian Hales would be the school's interim coach and the Bulldogs would begin the hiring process for a permanent successor.
