CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In a rematch of last season's NCISAA Division I state title game, Country Day was victorious over Charlotte Latin in high school playoff football.
The Bucaneers will battle Providence Day for the crown next week after a 41-21 win. Back-to-back quarterback keepers by Michael Radford from one yard out gave CDS an early 14-0 lead.
After an interception at the start of the second quarter, Radford did it with his arm, finding tight end Brian Erb from 12 yards out to give the Bucs a 21-0 lead with 9:33 left in the second frame. That score came after tailback William Roberts ran it 59 yards into the red zone against a Latin defense that had no answers all night.
The Hawks cut the deficit to 21-7 with a short scoring run with 4:13 left in the second quarter, but Radford and the Bucs responded. The gunslinger found big receiver Royce Turnbull for a beautiful 58-yard strike as the Bucs went up 28-7 into the halftime locker room.
Latin kept it competitive over the final two quarters, but the 21-point deficit was too much to overcome.
The Hawks, who shared the CISAA league title with Providence Day, end the season at 8-3. Country Day, meanwhile, will go for its second straight title.
