CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Twenty five years after a state championship team, Providence Day can say it is prep football champs again after beating Country Day 20-14 to take home the NCISAA Division I title Friday night at home.
The Chargers, the number one seed in the post season, held on late to get the narrow victory, the third for head coach Bruce Hardin. Providence Day lost in the title game in 2005, 1991 and 1992, and was ruled the winner in 1986 when Harrells Academy would not play in the title game.
But now, Providence Day can truly say they are the champs, finishing the season at 10-2.
Country Day, which was going for its second straight title, ends the season at 8-4.
