CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Catholic took advantage of turnovers and dominated the line of scrimmage to pound Marvin Ridge in the second round of the Class 3AA high school football playoffs Friday night in south Charlotte.
The Cougars won 49-28, and controlled the game throughout. Catholic led 21-0 at the break thanks to three first half Mavericks turnovers. On its first drive of the game, Catholic went 80 yards after a David Herlocker interception of Mavericks quarterback Tyler Chadwick in the end zone. Sophomore tailback Elijah Hood finished the impressive drive with a short touchdown score, his 29th of the season.
Hood made it 21-0 with 3:28 left in the second frame on a short two yard score, a drive that was set up by a Mavericks lost fumble.
In the second half it was more of the same as the Cougars scored twice in the third before the Mavericks finally dented the scoreboard to cut the deficit to 42-7.
Marvin Ridge finished the year at 10-2, while Catholic is now 12-0 and advances to play A.L. Brown next Friday.
