"This year he's just taken it to a whole different level," says Shelby head coach Aubrey Hollifield of his senior guard Gave DeVoe.
"I know if my jump shot is falling, it's hard to guard me," says DeVoe.
It certainly has been all season. The Golden Lions senior leads the state in scoring, averaging over 33 points per game.
"The crowd helps out a lot," says DeVoe. "When you see one or two shots fall, the basket keeps getting bigger and bigger. It seems like every shot you take is going to go in."
DeVoe has made it nearly impossible for opponents to guard him this year. He already has one game over 50 points and two over 40. So to all those who try to shut him down, good luck!
"I've been working on keeping my composure because I know a lot of guys, their best defense is to try and frustrate me."
But that simply hardly ever happens. DeVoe's season low is a measly 22. His dynamic play has his coach likening him to players like Lebron James.
"You're talking about a 6'4”, 195 pound guard," says Hollifield. "He's a pretty intimidating force at the high school level."
And his basketball smarts are through the roof so it shouldn't be surprise that he kills it in the classroom as well with a 4.4 GPA.
Says Hollifield, "I mean he's just got that type of work ethic and that basketball IQ that will take him as high as he needs to go."
It's taking him down to Clemson to play for Brad Brownell next year. And it's not just the scoring. DeVoe has led the team in scoring and rebounding for three straight years. And he's now second on the team in assists.
"A lot of times, people just focus on the scoring but I'm a really good passer as well," says DeVoe.
"He's the total package, there's nothing that he lacks," says Hollifield.
