CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith traded his helmet for a coach's whistle on Tuesday.
Smith was on the practice field, giving pointers to Mallard Creek High School's football team.
The school won the Powerade Coach for the Day essay contest.
Smith says he enjoys the program because of the impact it has on student-athletes.
"I get an opportunity to come down and be at their level and I give them advice and give them information and the tools they need to excel at what they want to do," Smith said.
The Mallard Creek team also received 20 cases of Powerade to keep them hydrated during workouts.
