CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- A vote to remove non-boarding parochial schools from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has failed.

The NCHSAA sent a ballot to its 390 schools last month allowing principals to vote on changing a rule that allows Charlotte Catholic, Kernersville McGuinness and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons to be members in the organization.

NCHSAA commissioner Davis Whitfield announced Thursday that the vote was 234-51 in favor of making the change. But it failed to meet the required three-fourths majority of 293 schools to pass.

Six Rowan County schools -- Salisbury, West Rowan, East Rowan, South Rowan, North Rowan and China Grove Carson -- requested the vote.
