Charlotte Christian makes Colby's dream a reality Friday

Charlotte Christian student Colby Young's dream came true during Friday's game, when he and his family were sent off to New York City, where he'll meet his idol Bobby Flay.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- On a cool, misty night in the Queen City, the Charlotte Christian community gathered to deliver a ray of sunshine on Friday evening during the Knights' home game against Carolina Pride.

Following an explosive first quarter by the home team, athletic director John Kasay called attention to the home sideline, when the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Charlotte brought Charlotte Christian student Colby Young out with his family for a special presentation.

Young, who has been battling cancer, has helped raise money with the "Change for Change" program, where loose change collected will go to those battling illness in Asheville, North Carolina. After allowing Young to speak to the enthusiastic crowd on hand, Kasay turned the mic over to Eugene Robinson, who gave Colby the surprise of his life. Colby, if you didn't know, is an aspiring chef, and his dream is to visit New York City and cook with his hero, Bobby Flay.

When Colby opened the big, blue box presented to him by the CCS community, a cook book from Flay was inside, along with itinerary for Young's entire family to fly to New York City, where Colby will get to cook with his idol.

On the field, the home crowd's spirits were lifted by impressive play by their Knights. The offense was rolling in the first quarter, with quarterback Garrett Shrader connecting with John Turley on a 25-yard touchdown pass, giving Christian a 7-0 lead. On the Knights' next possession, it was more of the same for Christian, with Shrader finding Terrelle Brown for a 16-yard touchdown, the first score of Brown's varsity career.

After a quick three and out, Elijah Deveaux flashed down the right sideline and hauled in a 45-yard strike from Shrader to give the Knights a 21-0 lead. Charlotte Christian rolled to a 59-3 victory over the Pride.

Charlotte Christian visits Charlotte Latin next week in an important conference battle.
