CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In a match up of area high school football heavy weights, Butler reigned supreme with a victory over host Independence on Friday night, the last night of the regular season.

It wasn't easy for the Bulldogs, ranked as the second best team in Charlotte behind Mallard Creek.  But junior quarterback Riley Ferguson and company were tough to stop on offense and held on late for a 38-26 win on the Patriots' senior night.

Butler led 24-14 at halftime and took care of business during a rainy second half in front of a few thousand cold but raucous fans.

Independence tailback R.J. Baker scored late in the fourth quarter to cut the Patriots deficit to 31-26, but Butler sealed it with a touchdown for the 12-point win.

With the win, Butler improves to 9-1 and takes home the Southwestern 4A league title for the third straight season.  Independence ends the regular season with an 8-2 record and a third place finish in the league thanks to a tiebreaker head-to-head loss to Ardrey Kell.

"Those guys are tough, you know what I mean.  To see the difference in them (Independence) in just one year, they are doing a great job," said Bulldogs coach Brian Hales after the win.  "Just to be a part of this Independence-Butler game, from this prespective, it's special."
