Latin breaks through for thrilling title

No #FNFrenzy Friday night, but we were treated to a state championship title game between Charlotte Latin and Charlotte Christian

CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte Latin Hawks finally broke through and won another state championship after three-straight years of finishing second.

Latin defeated Charlotte Christian, 28-27 to capture the independent school Division 1 championship.

"I couldn't be more excited for them," said Head Coach Larry McNulty. "By God they're going to get a ring."

Not without some drama.

Latin held a 28-6 lead in the second half, but the Knights stormed back.

With 32 seconds left, Garrett Shrader found Ricky Kofoed in the end zone to bring Charlotte Christian within a point -- 28-27.

The Knights went for two, and perhaps the win, but Ryan Ensor swatted the pass down, preserving the Latin victory.

"Feels great," said quarterback Bates Jones: "We worked really hard to get here."

"We all came together," said running back DeMarkes Stradford. "We did what we had to do to win a state championship."
