Locals Meeks and Maye helping Heels

North Carolina had an unlikely hero in its Sweet 16 win over Butler.

CHAPEL HILL - Two Charlotte-area natives are helping the North Carolina Tar Heels have a fantastic season in 2016-17.

Kennedy Meeks, a West Charlotte graduate, and Hough grad Luke Maye have had a big part in UNC clinching at least a share of the ACC regular-season championship this season.

Meeks, a senior, finished fourth in the ACC in rebounding with 9.1 boards per game. He was also efficient on offense, making 54.3 percent of all field goal attempts.

Along with Justin Jackson, Meeks is the only other Tar Heel to start all 31 games this season.

Maye, a sophomore, has played in 32 games, averaging 5.5 points, and 4.1 rebounds helping off the bench. Huntersville's Maye became an unlikely hero for the Heels Friday, when he scored 16 points and grabbed 12 boards in the Sweet 16 victory over Butler.
