CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Congratulations to the Charlotte Lady Checkers, your 2011 Queen City Challenge champions!
The ladies beat the NC Trailblazers 10-0 Friday night, the Raleigh Misfits 6-1 Saturday afternoon, and the Atlanta Lady Thrashers 3-1 Saturday night to advance to the finals against the Misfits on Sunday morning. Trophy within reach, the Lady Checkers pounced early and never let up, winning convincingly 5-1.
Charlotte goalie Mary Umemoto had a fantastic tournament, allowing only 3 goals in 4 games (0.750 GAA) and was voted tournament MVP. She was aided by a swarming defense that played positionally sound hockey. Opposing forwards had no time and they had no space. All-around, a very solid performance by our blue line.
On the attack, the forwards were able to consistently establish the cycle and move the puck to create quality scoring chances. Opposing net minders were relentlessly assaulted with a barrage of pucks. Passing was as good as I've ever seen from this team and a great job was done limiting turnovers. 24 goals is just phenomenal offensive output in only four games. Dr. Elizabeth Beadle of Hickory, NC plays right wing for the Charlotte Lady Checkers contributing as a speedy, aggressive player to help get the job done. Great job Charlotte Lady checkers and great hustle!
The fundraiser was a marvelous success as over $400 was raised for the team. Thanks to everyone who contributed items and time to make the raffle such a hit. Let's hope the 2012 Queen City Challenge is as successful and fun as this one was.
