MYERS PARK, N.C.- Today we’re not just focusing on one Student Athlete of the Week. There are two leaders on the Myers Park baseball team that deserve to be recognized on and off the field. After going through four baseball coaches in four years...the Myers Park Mustangs are starting off the season 4 and 0!
New coach, Erik Foor, says short stop, Patrick Alvarez, and pitcher, Evan Campbell, are leading the way.
“Those two have been our leaders . Patrick as a defensive player and Evan with the pitching staff. They've represented us well,” said Foor.
Ask the players, and it’s the coach who is behind the team’s recent success.
“I love coach Foor and I just want to say thanks. This is completely different than anything I've ever been a part of,” said Alvarez.
“Playing with Coach Foor…he’s one of the most rigorous and intense coaches we've had, but it's going to lead us to success in the future,” added Campbell.
In fact, right now the only complaint is that he didn't get to Myers Park soon enough. Foor was at the University of Iowa before coming to Myers Park in August.
“Getting him my senior year has been a blessing, but I would love to have had him earlier on in my career. His college experience has propelled me to new heights in my baseball career,” said Campbell.
It's clear, both players are learning skills that they'll take with them long past high school.Campbell said he’s motivated to do his best in intense situations.
“Pitching is one that requires the ability to stay calm when the pressure's high,” he told us.
“Coach Foor gives me a lot of opportunity to branch out and make all the right calls so it's on me, which I love,” said Alvarez.
Sounds like we also have a coach of the week.
“They represent what I'm trying to bring to this program. On the field hustle, energy, attitude,” said Foor.
