OMAHA, Neb. -- Cullen Jones (Irvington, N.J., N.C. State '06) and Elliott Keefer (Cincinnati, Ohio, Ohio State '11) will both give it a shot to make the 2012 USA Swimming Olympic team Friday night as they both swam their way into the finals during the 2012 Olympic team trials Thursday. Jones, a 2008 gold medalist, is seeded eighth in the 100 freestyle and Keefer is fifth in the 200 breaststroke.
While those two advanced, Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn., Michigan '06, Oxford '10) placed fourth in the 200 butterfly, again just missing out on making the Olympic team. Tarwater took it out fast and led the first 50, was right there at the 100, but couldn’t hold on to place first or second.
For those who have followed Tarwater’s career, this is another close call in his quest to represent the USA in the Olympic games. Earlier in the week he was seventh in the 100 free--top six go--and in 2008 he was third in the 200 fly. Tarwater still has the 100 fly remaining, so he still has another chance to make the team.
Also in action Thursday night were Josh Schneider (Cincinnati, Ohio, Cincinnati '10), Nick Brunelli (Mansfield, Mass., Arizona State '05) and Kate Mills (Sacramento, California, Harvard '11).
Schneider and Brunelli competed in the 100 free and finished 15th and 16th, respectively. Both will be competing in the 50 free later this week.
Mills’ swim in the 200 fly marks her last of the meet. She placed 13th in the event with a new personal best. Mills will now prepare for graduate school in Spain that starts this fall.
