SOCHI, Russia -- She’s been skiing since she was a toddler, and this isn’t her first Olympics, but Alpine Skier Julia Mancuso says it’s exciting to be in Sochi.
“There’s a lot going on, and I’m just excited to go out and compete,” Mancuso tells NBC Charlotte’s Dave Wagner.
She could be considered the new “it girl,” since Lindsey Vonn won’t be competing.
Mancuso says she doesn’t feel the pressure to win, and she competes for herself. She says medals would be fun to take home, but coming to Sochi is about the chance to perform on the world stage.
The Olympian feels like the conditions are ready for the games, and she’s prepared for the big races.
Her ultimate goal is to feel like she went home feeling like she did her best.
“I can’t really control what other athletes are doing. If they have a better day than me, I can’t control that. I can just control what I do. I’m going to really be fighting for medals and just push myself to have the best races I can.”
Also a surfer, Mancuso jokes the waves on the Black Sea do look fun, even if it’s too cold to get out in them. She divides her time between Squaw Valley, Calif. and Maui.
