LONDON -- Being an Olympian is a team effort -- from the athlete to the coach to the parents to the doctors.
The Carolina Chiropractors in London played a big in helping Olympians do their best.
"I think one of the things most people don't realize is everybody competes injured on some level if they're a professional,” Charlotte Chiropractor Dr. Matt McAlees said.
In London there are 150 chiropractors working with U.S. athletes. These doctors represent a wellness program called Maximized Living.
There are 12 doctors from Charlotte, including Dr. Matt McAlees.
“We’re doing a lot of work on their spine, muscle work, their nutrition, mindset, keeping them really away from the stress,” McAlees said.
Tervel Dlagnev/Wrestler: “I'm a heavyweight. So, one of the stigmas is, he eats what he wants all the time. Just gorge it down,” U.S. wrestler Trevel Dlagney said. “But it's just not as an elite athlete, you can't do that so I'm just learning, really, how to eat correctly and has been a huge help."
For some of these athletes just the trip here took its toll.
"Flying a 12 hour flight and then you're working hard and your body just gets beat up and being able to get that alignment and keep the good in and the bad out is a big part of it,” U.S. wrestler Sam Hazewinkel said.
Athletes say the doctors provide them with sound bodies and peace of mind.
"For me, it's very much mental. It's keeping my mind right, just keeping my head in the game,” Hazewinkel said. “Not getting overwhelmed with too much. Not over thinking stuff and like I said, having all the right people around makes it easier."
As the games come to a close, many remain in awe of Olympic athletes.
"These Olympic athletes are here doing what they're doing to their bodies and competing to inspire us to go home and be the best that we can be,” McAlees said. “And I think that's the takeaway story that I've gotten and I think a lot of people out there can relate to is, you know, just don't go through life surviving. Go thrive. Go make something. Go live it to its fullest."
