Panthers award hurricane relief grants to 23 high schools

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers have awarded $250,000 in Hurricane Matthew disaster relief grants to 23 high schools in the Carolinas.

Panthers Charities said in their website that grants are designed to help cover the costs athletic programs in the replacement or repair of equipment, supplies or athletic infrastructure lost or damaged as a result of the flooding and wind damages from the hurricane.

Panthers Director of Community Relations Riley Fields said in a press release that Hurricane Matthew and its aftermath was catastrophic for many communities across the region with many high schools sustaining loss or damage to athletic equipment and facilities.

"The Carolina Panthers hope this grant funding will enable schools and the communities they serve to return to a sense of normalcy by helping fund critical repairs and equipment and infrastructure replacement for high school athletic programs," Fields said.

The awarded rants ranged from $2,500 to $20,000, based on need.

High School, Darlington (S.C.) High School, First Baptist School (Charleston, S.C.), Green Sea Floyds High School (Green Sea, S.C.), Hemingway (S.C.) High School, Hilton Head (S.C.) High School, Johnsonville (S.C.) High School, Kingstree (S.C.) High School, Latta (S.C.) High School, Loris (S.C.) High School, Lumberton (N.C.) High School, Military Magnet Academy (North Charleston, S.C.), Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School, North Myrtle Beach High School (Litle River, S.C.), Ocracoke (N.C.) High School, Sumter (S.C.) High School, St. James High School (Murrells Inlet, S.C.), Topsail High School (Hampstead, N.C.), Wallace Rose High School (Teachey, N.C.)
