CONCORD -- North Carolina begins its defense of National Championship No. 6 Monday night as they host Northern Iowa.

But there's a player outside of Charlotte they believe could lead them to future titles.

Six-foot-seven forward Rechon "Leaky" Black signed with the Tar Heels on Wednesday.

"I'm die-hard UNC, Carolina blue," he told NBC Charlotte sports.

Black can handle the ball, and could grow even taller.

"(Coach Roy Williams) doesn’t care how tall I get," Black said, "he told me he’s going to put the ball in my hands."

"He's a versatile player who can play multiple positions," Williams told the team website. "He can play point guard. His greatest skill is understanding the game."

Black actually grew up a Duke fan, even making his mom, Carla buy him a Duke comforter set.

But a Tar Heel herself, she's happy with the reversal.

"He's a Tar Heel forever," she said. "So mom's excited about that."

Black began his career at Concord High School, but transferred to Montverde (FL) Academy, where he played against the nation's elite. But family drew him back home, and now he's at Cox Mill.

His teammate there? Standout junior Wendell Moore, who could have his choice come down to Duke and UNC.

"I can just see him in Carolina blue," Black said. "And I tell him that every day."
