ROCK HILL, S.C.- There are 868 miles between Rock Hill South Carolina and Milwaukee Wisconsin, but on Tuesday, the Eagles will make a trip that has been seven years in the making.
Winthrop won the Big South Tournament last week and locked in their spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2010.
On Sunday, they found out they were the No. 13 seed in the South bracket, and their first matchup would be against fourth-seed Butler.
"It's going to be a big challenge, I know that. I've watched a little bit of tape on them... but I haven't dove into preparation yet. About four in the morning I'll be able to tell you a lot more about Butler," Winthrop head coach Pat Kelsey said right after finding out the Eagles fate.
It's the Eagles first trip to the tournament under Kelsey, and the first for this senior class.
"For this senior class to be able to cross that finish line, win a championship and experience this and drink it all in, is something very, very special that they'll remember for the rest of their lives," Kelsey said.
