Bill McGinty serves as the anchor of NBC Charlotte News at 5:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. along with the lead consumer and investigative reporter. He responds to consumer based complaints that lead to in-depth investigative reporting. His series is known as "Get McGinty."
In 2013, Bill's reporting led to a lawsuit being filed against a local property investor who acquired a valuable home from an 88-year-old woman with dementia. The "purchase" took place bedside in a nursing home without the elderly woman's family or lawyer present. Our reporting, and exposure of the issue, prompted a lawsuit, and a judge freezing the property from future sale until the matter was settled. In May 2014, the suit was settled out of court with an estimated $155,000 going back to the elderly woman and her family per public records.
Our 2012 North Carolina based story on unexplained and sudden fires in Jeep Wranglers helped lead to a national recall in the 2010 model, a Regional Murrow and an Emmy nomination.
Bill's reporting also helped keep a Stage IV Cancer patient in her home despite efforts by a major bank to foreclose and sell it at auction.
Prior to working here in Charlotte, Bill worked in Tampa Bay for 13 years at WTSP-TV as a general assignment reporter and weekend morning anchor.
Bill's career got started in1989 at WBKB-TV in Alpena, MI, which at the time was the smallest TV market in the United States. Other career stops included Rockford, Illinois, and Reno, Nevada. Perhaps the most interesting moment in Bill's career came in October 1996 while he was reporting for WTSP and watched his personal car burn in the middle of the St. Petersburg riots.
Bill has won seven regional Emmy Awards for his reporting and has been honored recently with two Edward R. Murrow Awards for writing and reporting.
Bill is a native of Pittsburgh and attended John Carroll University in Cleveland.
