CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Plaza Midwood neighborhood is getting some parking relief just in time for what organizers hope will be a big event.

The neighborhood will host Holiday Central on Friday. The celebration will feature Santa, a tree lighting and activities for children.

Santa is going to come by and light up Central Avenue, said Lesa Kastanas of the Plaza Midwood Merchants Association. It's the idea of not just drawing people to the neighborhood but celebrating what we have.

What this neighborhood has is stores, restaurants and bars, but not always enough spaces for guests to park.

We need more work done with parking, but we're getting there, Kastanas said.

The neighborhood's latest parking solution is a lot on the corner of The Plaza and Hammorton. It is owned by Green Memorial Baptist Church next door.

I've just been looking for more ways to be involved and we have a parking lot that we don't use often during the week, and I thought, well, if that's a way we can help out, that is something we can do, then make it available, said Matthew Eades, pastor of Green Memorial.

Kastanas says the parking lot will certainly help, but more work needs to be done.

We are in the process of working with some private folks to get some more parking here, Kastanas said.

For now, though, the focus is on Holiday Central where Kastanas is proud to reveal that Santa will arrive in style.

He's going to arrive in a red Cadillac Convertible, Kastanas said.

Holiday Central runs from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Santa will be at the fire station on The Plaza from 3:30 to 5:30, and the tree lighting gets underway in front of Zada Jane's Corner Cafe at 6 p.m.
