CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The caregiver of an elderly man who was found dead in the University Area Saturday has been charged with neglect.

George Watts, 78, was found dead at 7 a.m. Saturday at a home on Hellebore Road. When officers arrived they found that Watts had been dead for several days.

On Tuesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Watt's stepson, Wilbert Sinclair Smith Junior, turned himself into police on Monday.

Smith, 31, has been charged with neglect of a disabled/elderly man causing serious injury. Police say Smith was the caregiver for Watts.

NewsChannel 36 has learned Smith bonded out of jail early Tuesday morning.
