CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It s been a little more than a month since the shocking murder of a Ballantyne restaurant manager.
On Saturday, the people who work at the Flying Biscuit Cafe and surrounding businesses are asking the community to help them celebrate Danielle Watson's life with a special fundraiser.
Watson was the pregnant manager at the restaurant who was one week shy of marriage when she was allegedly stabbed to death.
It was pretty scary. It was a huge shock, said Doolittle's child hair salon owner John Marszalek. I don t know what to tell customers. We had to close, obviously. I had to call customers back and I didn t even know what to say.
Next door to Doolittle s, Watson was murdered. Her body was found behind a dumpster near the restaurant, and police say her co-worker, Mark Cox, was desperate for money and killed her.
It was real tough. They closed for several days and had a crew come in and just refresh the whole place just (to) try to move past it in a physical sense by redoing the restaurant, Marszalek said.
Now the community is trying to move on together.
Mary Benard is a stylist at Doolittle s.
It s been pretty hard. We're just kind of cheering them on and helping everything get back to normal around here.
The Flying Biscuit is hosting a fundraiser Saturday and most of the businesses around the restaurant will also donate part of their profits to a memorial fund in Watson s name.
We re friends and it s just the right thing to do, said Marszalek. We re a close knit community here, so yeah, I think it s a fantastic thing for us to do.
The event is Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the courtyard near the Flying Biscuit Cafe in the Stonecrest Shopping Center.
