CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is alerting the community to a scam that a caller claims to be with the department.

Detectives were recently alerted to a scam where a caller claimed to be with the CMPD Warrant Division. The caller identified themselves as an officer and advised that the victim had a warrant for failure to appear for jury duty.

The caller then stated that the victim could purchase Money Pack cards to pay for the warrant and asked the victim to meet at police headquarters to pick up paper work. The caller would then contact the victim and tell them to provide the card numbers off the back of the Money Pack cards.

Police said these scammers went as far as to record a message on their voicemail as if you were calling the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The department is also reminding the community that no law enforcement agency will ever call or email you claiming you have a warrant and ask for credit card information.
