Many eagle cam fans noticed that there was only one eaglet in the nest and staff at the Raptor Center confirmed that the other eaglet had passed away Thursday afternoon.

Savannah and Derek s eaglets were born the weekend of March 4.

We noticed that the bird was not visible in the camera when we arrived this morning and have since entered the aviary and determined that the second eaglet has died, said Mathias Engelmann, CRC s resident eagle expert and senior rehabilitation coordinator. There were no visible signs of trauma, and the body has been removed.

Medical staff at the center will try to determine the cause of death over the next few days.

A health check was performed today on the remaining eaglet, and it appears to be healthy and growing normally.

As the eaglets have grown over the past weeks, one appeared significantly stronger and healthier than the other. Staff at the Carolina Raptor Center said eaglets have been receiving full portions of food, and Savannah and Derek had been observed feeding each of them normally.

The remaining eaglet will be released around 12 weeks old.
