HICKORY, N.C. Groundbreaking for a playground honoring the life of the late Zahra Baker will take place next month, the city of Hickory confirmed Tuesday.
Several local groups have held different events such as a golf outing, blood drive and other benefits to raise money for the playground, which will be handicap accessible. A groundbreaking event will occur on November 16.
Zahra, 10, was murdered last fall even after surviving two bouts of bone cancer. She was reported missing by her father and stepmother in October 2010. Her remains were found scattered between Caldwell and Catawba counties a month later.
Her stepmother, Elisa Baker, recently pled guilty to second degree murder and will spend about 15-18 years in jail.
About $170,000 has been raised for the playground.
