Mayor Anthony Foxx arrived at the Reedy Creek neighborhood before noon on Saturday to speak with victims of last night's storm.

Foxx said he spent time with police this morning on an aerial tour to survey damage and he plans to ask the federal government for disaster relief aid.

It was devastating, he said. I've seen homes completely flattened and automobiles inside homes.

As of noon on Saturday, Foxx said the Red Cross and disaster relief teams are going home to home to make sure victims of the storm are safe.

In Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties, early damage assessments show 89 homes have been affected, eight with major damage and three destroyed, according to a Red Cross press release.

The Red Cross has now opened an additional shelter at Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg.

As of right now there are no reports of fatalities and we are continuing to hold out hope, Foxx said.
