CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Cam Newton's march to the Madden cover continued as he defeated San Francisco linebacker Patrick Willis to reach the finals against Detroit receiver Calvin Megatron Johnson.
Newton, the Panthers quarterback who was Rookie of the Year in 2011, garnered 53% of the vote in the matchup with Willis, in the online fan balloting.
Johnson easily defeated Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers with 67 percent of the vote in the other semifinal.
There is an alleged curse that comes with the cover of the popular EA Sports' Madden NFL video game. Many of the past cover boys had drop-offs in production or were injured the following season.
But Newton indicated last week he wasn't worried about a supposed curse, saying he grew up playing the game and was honored just to be in the running.
