CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Jacob's Ladder, a non-profit that helps underemployed and unemployed find work, is in critical need of funding.

The agency, which has been around for 14 years in Charlotte and has served thousands of people, will try to raise $200,000 over the next two weeks. Without the money, the agency says the organization is at stake.

We see people who've been underemployed and unemployed maybe don't have a high school education, said Holly Cummings, Jacob's Ladder Executive Director.

Aleshia Bennett, who received training at Jacob's Ladder, is starting a new job where she'll receive benefits, health care and full-time work for the first time.

It's a great feeling to have a purpose and it gives me a reason to get up in the morning, she said.

Could she have gotten the job she has now without the help of Jacob's Ladder?

Absolutely not, she said.

The agency offers clients one-month training classes. Instructors focus on job training, computer training, resume writing, communication skills and even offers clients work clothing and accessories.

We want them to feel good about themselves, said Cummings.

Cummings said she's reaching out to churches, individuals and businesses in order to raise the money fast.

In the past we've had diverse funding. We'll need all of them in order to pull this off, said Cummings.

The agency will also use social media to get the word out and will offer a virtual event where the public can come to the agency and walk through the exact process that clients participate in.

Our wonderful instructors find a way to motivate them, to let them know they can do it, said Cummings.

They really helped me to focus on what to do and what I wanted to do. If you know what to do, (they said) we'll help you get there, said Bennett.

The virtual experience will be held at Jacob's Ladder at 2304 The Plaza on August 14 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
