RALEIGH, N.C. -- The North Carolina Senate unanimously passed Kilah's Law on Wednesday, which will increase the penalty for child abuse.

Kilah Davenport, House Bill 75's namesake, was brutally beaten by her stepfather, police say, leaving her with severe and permanent brain damage.

Last week, a North Carolina Senate Committee passed the bill, which has already made it through the house.

The family of the local girl has been pushing for the tougher penalties for the better part of the last year.

Kilah's Law will double or triple current penalties for felony child abuse.

Kilah's stepfather is set to appear in court on felony child abuse in June.
