MARLBORO, M.D. -- The US Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward up to $100,000 for information in connection with the shooting death of a postal worker Saturday night.

Police said Tyson Jerome Barnette, 26, of Upper Marlboro, Md., was on duty when he was shot and killed around 7:20 p.m. in the 6000 block of Reed Street in Cheverly, Md.

NBC Charlotte's sister station, NBCWashington, reports that Barnette's family is from Rock Hill.

Fellow postal workers came to the scene, and told NBCWashington's Darcy Spencer that they worried about their own safety as well.

That could have been me, one told Spencer.

There have been complaints in recent months that postal carriers are having to deliver mail later in the day, sometimes after it is dark.

A press release from the USPS said, Any person who kills or attempts to kill any officer or employee of the United States while the employee is engaged in the performance of his official duties can be sentenced to the death penalty.
