CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man was killed in a two-vehicle accident in south Charlotte Tuesday night.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Ramez Ahmed Shams Eldin was killed when a Ford Expedition collided with his Jeep Cherokee on South Tryon Street near West Tyvola Road.

Police said Michael Perrella was driving his Ford Expedition at a high rate of speed and struck Eldin's Jeep in the rear. After the crash, both vehicles spun out of control, according to police.

Perrella's Expedition drove across the northbound lanes of South Tryon Street and struck a telephone pole. Eldin's vehicle came to rest along the sidewalk of South Tryon Street, police said.

Medic responded and transported Perrella to Carolina's Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Medic pronounced Eldin dead at the scene.

Police said speed and impairment are factors in this crash, and Perrella has been charged with driving while impaired and a warrant for felony death by motor vehicle has been issued.

The warrant will be served upon his release from the hospital. The investigation is still in progress at this time, according to police.
