CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A controversial project began in the Sedgefield neighborhood Wednesday morning.
Trees are being cut and cleared and new sidewalks are being put in on Park Road between Poindexter Drive and Sunset Drive.
It s very upsetting, said one neighbor. I wish that they would have got our input on the planning part of this.
A sidewalk already exists on one side of the street, but the city said Park Road is too busy to not have sidewalks on both sides.
Nobody in the area asked for it, said another neighbor
Due to the Charlotte s Right of Way code the city can simply take the land from residents like Susan Hopkins.
They came to us and said this is a done deal, she said. She lost 19 feet of property.
Neighbors are also upset about the trees being cut down.
The word isn't aggravating, for many of us it was infuriating is a better word and astonishing, said neighbor Robert FitzPatrick.
But neighbors could do nothing but watch as tree removal companies, with their logos covered, began to clear the way for the future sidewalks.
It was just shocking that they can do that, Hopkins said.
Their council member, Patsy Kinsey, said the issue has already been decided.
Sidewalk construction is tentatively planned for later in March.
