North Carolina says Roy Williams' surgically removed kidney tumor was not cancerous.

In a statement Tuesday, the school says tests have determined it is a benign growth that is often indistinguishable from kidney cancer on X-rays and doesn't spread like a cancerous tumor would.

Williams also has a tumor on his left kidney, but according to the school, doctors say there is a good chance that growth is the same as the one removed last week. Doctors plan to biopsy that tumor next week and won't perform a second surgery if the tumor is the same.

The school has said Williams is expected to be back for the start of preseason practice.
