CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It was a chaotic afternoon at Olympic High School Wednesday as five home break-in suspects ran onto the school grounds for cover.
A mother named Brenda stood near the front door of the school looking over at police as they questioned several young men and looked through their backpacks.
I just want to go in and get my daughter. she said This has been going on for awhile now.
The school was placed on lockdown as police looked for five teens who they say broke into a house in the nearby Williams Glenn subdivision.
Police say at least one of the suspects was nabbed inside the school, and one suspect may have actually escaped by running through the school.
We don't know, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police sergeant Casey Carver. But we know his name and we know where he lives.
It all started when a 13-year-old was home talking to her mother on the phone.
The mother, who did not want to be identified, said she heard her dog barking and the doorbell ringing in the background and asked her daughter to look out of the window. She said that's when she heard a loud sound.
She teen told her mother some men were in the house and gave her mother a description of the men who broke into the house through a back kitchen window and stole a few items.
I was at work and so scared, said the mother who called 911. Another neighbor whose house was broken into last week saw them driving away and called police also.
Police said that there have been several break-ins in the area and they had stepped up their patrols. They arrived at the scene and then saw a car matching the description of the getaway car.
Olympic High School was placed on lockdown, but it was lifted after officers did a complete search of the school.
Four suspects are in police custody and one is still on the loose.
A surveillance camera at a neighbor s house eight days ago showed people breaking into a home. They threw a cinder block through a window. Once inside they ransacked the home.
At least one of the suspects was caught on surveillance tape in the driveway.
