North Carolina passed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage during a controversial vote on the May 8 primary. President Barack Obama said he was disappointed in the state while Governor Bev Perdue said We look like Mississippi due to the vote.

Mecklenburg was one of just eight counties that voted against the amendment.
