CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The cost for a family of four to live comfortably in Charlotte is $64,728.

That s according to the Economic Policy Institute s recently updated Family Budget Calculator.

The EPI says their findings show what it takes for a family to live free of serious economic deprivation. The cost given is what it takes to secure a modest living standard.

The numbers range from just over $48,000 in Marshall Co., Miss. to more than $93,000 in New York City. Charlotte falls just over the median of $63,238.

The EPI budget calculator allots the following for families of two adults and two children:

  • Monthly Housing -- $793
  • Monthly Food -- $754
  • Monthly Child Care -- $1062
  • Monthly Transportation -- $607
  • Monthly Health Care -- $1427
  • Monthly Other Necessities -- $396
  • Monthly Taxes -- $355
  • Monthly Total -- $5394
  • Annual Total -- $64728



The costs for families of four to live comfortably in cities around the country include:

  • Washington, D.C.: $88,615
  • Boston, Mass: $85,641
  • Philadelphia, Pa.: $77,293
  • Milwaukee, Wis.: $73,329
  • Seattle, Wash.: $70,025
  • Chicago, Ill.: $69,028
  • Detroit, Mich.: $66,896
  • St. Louis, Mo.: $64,332
