CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A traffic accident involving a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer is under investigation.

It happened shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of WT Harris Boulevard and Perimeter Parkway.

A witness, who didn't want to be identified, told NBCCharlotte crews on the scene that the officer ran the stop light without any sirens or lights activated on his marked vehilce -- the officer then rammed an unsuspecting driver at the intersection.

The witness says they were able to snap photos of the accident just seconds after it happened. The cell phone photos show the unsuspecting driver crawling out of his vehicle and onto the road.

Another photo shows the officer and another man helping the driver as he sat in the roadway.

CMPD tells NBCCharlotte, the accident was property damage only.

The extent of the driver's injuries or that of the officer's were not immediately clear. Medic officials said they were not able to advise because the crash involved an officer and any statements involving the crash would have to come from CMPD.

No word yet if any charges will be filed.
