SALISBURY, N.C. -- Salisbury police arrested a man in connection with a shooting at Salisbury High School on Monday afternoon.

Police arrested Dajaun Lamont Russell at a family member s residence on E. Fisher Street around 10 p.m.

Police say a shooting occurred in the area of the gymnasium, behind the high school, after classes dismissed for the day, around 3 p.m.

Authorities say there was a confrontation between two groups, including some Salisbury High School students. They believe the incident is connected to an altercation that occurred over the weekend.

One student, 16-year-old Shaleek Williams, was shot and taken to Novant Health Rowan Regional Medical Center by private vehicle. Police say Shaleek was punched in the face then shot in the abdomen.

Williams is a junior varsity basketball and football player. Students tell NBC Charlotte's reporter on the scene that Shaleek was not the intended target.

Between 60 and 100 students were in and around the gym at the time of the shooting.

NBC Charlotte has learned Williams is expected to be OK

Russell is being held at the Rowan County Detention Center under a $ 250,000 bond.
