CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undergo surgery on his ankle.

Newton will go under anesthesia Wednesday at Carolinas Medical Center for surgery on his ankle for soreness that has existed since the end of the season , according to the Carolina Panthers.

Panthers team physician Robert Anderson will perform the surgery.

Team officials say Cam will need about four months of recovery.

The ankle was sore after the San Francisco game and we wanted to see if rest would calm it down, but it is still bothering him and the decision was made to address it, says Panthers Head Athletic Trainer Ryan Vermillion.
