Jury selection begins in trial for Gaston teacher, coach
GASTON COUNTY. N.C. -- A former teacher and wrestling coach of East Gaston High School charged with multiple child sex crimes was back in court Wednesday.
Jury selection began in Gary Scott Goins' trial and lasted all day. All twelve jurors were seated at the Gaston County Courthouse. The state and defense vetted the jurors to make sure they have no connection with the cases and seeing if they can be present throughout its duration.
Judge Jesse Caldwell questioned jurors about their background and employment obligations. The three alleged victims and their families were in the courtroom. Authorities say the alleged offenses took place between May 1, 1999 and June 15, 2004.
Gaston Police tell NBC Charlotte that some of the incidents took place at the school, and the charges are based on allegations by the three victims, both minors at the time the crimes were allegedly committed.
Opening statements will likely begin Thursday morning.
