HICKORY, N.C. The Hickory Public Schools Board of Education voted Walter Hedrick Hart as new superintendent at a Monday meeting.
The vote was unanimous and he will begin work November 1.
Hart replaces Dr. Lillie Cox, who left to become the superintendent at Alamance-Burlington Schools.
A myriad of professional achievements contribute to the selection of Dr. Hart to lead as the new superintendent of Hickory Public Schools, said Joab Cotton, chairman of the HPS Board of Education.
Hart lives in China Grove and is currently the assistant superintendent for Rowan-Salisbury schools. He has worked there since 2007 and supervises 35 principals and manages a budget of $20 million.
I am thrilled to join Hickory Public Schools, said Dr. Hart in a statement. I would like to thank the Board of Education for this tremendous opportunity and the trust that they have placed in me.
Throughout the selection process, it became clear that the Board takes great pride in its schools and makes meeting the needs of children its top priority. I look forward to working with the teachers and staff to build upon their traditions of excellence, to embrace challenges, and to create a climate in which all students, teachers, and staff realize their fullest potential, he said.
