LANCASTER, S.C. -- Lancaster authorities said they arrested a man after he had stolen tags on his vehicle and four kids were found hiding in the trunk of his car.

Lancaster police charged William Trey Benton, 33, with child endangerment, possession of stolen property, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving with suspended license.

Police responded to a call of stolen vehicle tag in Lancaster during their Christmas parade on Saturday.

When officers arrived on scene, they saw Benton driving a Ford Crown Victoria out of a parking spot along White street.

The license plate did not match the one given to the vehicle, according to the police report.

Officers were questioning Benton about the tags on his car when he opened the trunk and four kids jumped out of the car.

Police say the youngest child was 11. None of them were hurt.

Benton told police he was taking the family to the parade. Benton said he didn't have a driver's license but planned to switch seats with his son, who has a permit.

Benton was placed under arrest and taken to county jail.
